1986-1990

Bad Radio was a short-lived, San Diego funk rock band in the late 1980s, whose early work was reminiscent of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their real claim to fame however, was when pre-Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder replaced original frontman Keith Wood in 1988.

In 1989, the group recorded a four-song demo tape (informally called Tower Records Demo) which was sold on commission at local record stores. Later that year the group won a "Battle of the Bands" contest hosted by radio station 91X. The award money was used to record another four-song demo, What The Funk, featuring Vedder's composition, "I'm Alive," later recorded by Pearl Jam.

According to legend, Vedder was so embarrassed by the tapes that after joining Pearl Jam he offered to buy any and all copies at an inflated price.

Original vocalist Keith Wood returned following Vedder's departure in 1990 and the group relocated to Los Angeles.

Bootleg videos of the band (with Vedder) performing "Believe You Me" and "What the Funk" continue to circulate and can be found on YouTube.
