Gloria Van Dixhorn has worked with clay for over 20 years. Clay has the ability to be transformed into anything...any shape, texture and color. The possibilities are endless and in a world of infinite choices, she chooses to create, what she hopes you'll find fun and aesthetically pleasing. Traditionally Gloria has made functional pottery and sculptural chickens, dogs, crows and turtles. Recently she has created ceramic 3-D wall hangings. These new sculptures will be the highlighted pieces in her May show.

Please join us to celebrate the work of Gloria, live music by Tom Robichaud and Don Issacson, and Gallery Night (sponsored by the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art). There will be over 40 galleries and businesses open this evening, so start your gallery hopping early. We will also have food from Bunky's Cafe, a special tasting station of Wildtree oils and drinks for all. Wildtree's local representative, Jill Sullivan, will be on hand for your tasting pleasure. You can try some of these wonderful grapeseed oils and find out more about how tasty, easy and healthy cooking can be.

We will also have the pleasure of unavailing our new mural (located on our outer back wall, visible from the Capital City Bike Trail). Sara Licht is the talented artist who painted the mural of the Madison Skyline as seen from the Eastside. Sara also has other paintings, sculptures, prints and cards at Absolutely Art and is available for custom work. Please contact Absolutely Art for more information.

This is a family friendly event so don't hesitate to bring the whole family. We will have maps available for the event, but if we run out grab an Isthmus, the map will be on the back page of the May 1st issue. Gloria's show will run 5/1/08-5/31/08. All events will take place at Absolutely Art, 2322 Atwood Ave. For questions please call 608-249-9100 , email: meghan@absolutelyartllc.com or visit our website www.absolutelyartllc.com

Once again the Marquette Neighborhood Association has spared no expense in offering up two days of unsurpassed excitement at the 19th annual Marquette Waterfront Festival. Please come bask all day in the seductive Lake Mononan breezes as the community convenes on June 7th and 8th. The cottonwoods provide the ideal canopy for this rite of spring at picturesque Yahara Place Park on Madison's near Eastside.

On stage ten bands of great variety and renown will perform over the course of the weekend. Saturday's featured performers should fit the neighborhood's taste for the eclectic and the poly-rhythmic. The Vagabond Opera is from the Pacific Northwest and delivers passionate offerings of Bohemian cabaret. Paris hot Jazz, gut bucket swing, Tangos, Ukrainian folk-punk ballads, Klezmer and vigorous originals that meet a world of riverboat gambling queens, Turkish belly dancers, and the enigmatic Marlene Dietrich.

Nation Beat, based in New York City, introduces an unprecedented mix of northeastern Brazil's maracatu and the sounds of the American South. At the heart of Nation Beat lies the union of Brazilian beats with New Orleans second line rhythms, Appalachian-inspired bluegrass, funk, rock, and country-blues. As of late, rising Brazilian star Liliana Araujo fronts the ensemble with her soaring powerhouse vocals.

Confirmed local groups for Saturday's World Beat schedule include Brazilian Carnival aficionados Pagee Go Go in the leadoff spot. Prince Mantee and Blackstar Reggae have reunited for a rare appearance that should be loads of fun. Latin big band Grupo Candela won't disappoint as their steamy repertoire of salsas, merengues, cumbias and bachatas pack the dance lawn. Sandra Faitel and Mario Mendoza are two superb vocalists fronting this group of salseros.

Sunday's lineup will be pure Americana and should be solid from top to bottom. The featured bands showcase the youthful enthusiasm of Lafayette, Louisiana's Feufollet and the seasoned aplomb of Paul Cebar and the Milwaukeeans making their first appearance on an MNA stage. Feufollet (the name refers to the ghostly, luminescent marsh gases, once believed to be specters haunting the bayous) formed in 1995 when accordionist/singer Chris Stafford was 8 and fiddler Chris Segura was 11. Feufollet quickly became known as one of the most exciting Cajun bands in Acadiana, not because of their youth but because of their obvious musical ability and the vivacity with which they approached the traditional music of the area. Feufollet has been a band of young prodigies for so long, it can be hard to talk about them as just a band. But that's just what they are: a band of extremely talented and seasoned musicians who continue to explore the vital music of their culture and region. They also stole the show at last year's La Fête de Marquette.

Paul Cebar and the Milwaukeeans have been playing their particular brand of funk, soul and jazz in Wisconsin and around the country for more than 20 years. Everyone knows what a terrific band they are. The Milwaukeeans are changing their name to Tomorrow Sound. Here is Paul's explanation at a New Orleans interview:

"I've spent 24 years proudly laboring under a mock provincial moniker. The idea was to present an almost impossibly cosmopolitan brand of musical derring-do under the banner of a little known, politically progressive, immigrant-built, hard-laboring, Midwestern working man's city. Years of: "I thought you were a polka band so I didn't come," ensued. As my most recent group of Milwaukeeans has coalesced, I thought we might want to shake the wagon and rustle the bushes to somehow assert that we've got something new, vital and powerfully funky to bring to you: Tomorrow Sound. But we've got no grand branding machinery at our disposal so we can still be your Milwaukeeans."

Sunday's local lineup is almost completed and it will be perfect to have talented singer/songwriter Ritt Deitz and his quintet setting things in motion. Ritt has a couple of his kids backing him. Check the MNA website for details as the lineup fills in: www.marquette-neighborhood.org

The Dandelion Dash run/walk will once again be a fun component of this year's Waterfront sports lineup. The races (200meter kids dash, 1 and 2 mile, 5k, 10k and ultra-10k runs) will be contested on Saturday morning at 8:30 am and the registration will start at 7:30am. The always-popular coed volleyball tournament will be held on Saturday also and is coordinated by festival aide-de-camp Paul Nichols (243-8301).

Sunday's recreational activity is the Yahara River canoe race at noon. Race official John Haugen-Wente, the owner of John's Paddlin' (284-0300), welcomes all boating configurations (adult/child, all-women, all-men, soloists, and kayakers), sorts them into heats, handicaps the ringers and makes sure that everyone wins a prize.

The infinitely inventive Dorla Mayer is designing her 19th colorful T-shirt and there will be Waterfront hats and miscellaneous merchandise for sale this year. The Crystal Corner staff promises to keep the beer garden well stocked with Capital and Berghoff products and the Wil-Mar Center crew will be grilling up a storm. Once again neighborhood restaurateurs Lao Laan-Xang, Glass Nickel Pizza,Bab's French Quarter, The Chocolate Shoppe, Café Costa Rica and Jamerica will be vending their specialties. You can be assured there will be plenty of kids' games (11am to 3 PM) run by the neighborhood Scout troop and hay rides from 1-3:00 on both days. The Madison Children's Museum will be doing some hands-on activities for the supervised six and under set.

This year's generous sponsors include Willy St. Coop, Heartland Credit Union, GWABA, Hempen Goods, The Onion, MG&E, Capital Brewery, e-Lab Multimedia, Smart Studio, American Family Insurance, The Chocolate Shoppe, Mark Saunders Financial Planning, Research Products, TDS Construction, Yahara Builders, The Harmony, Weary Traveler Free House, Capital Water Softeners, Lazy Jane's/Mickey's, Mother Nature's Diaper Service, Boch Corporation, Mark Salisbury Studio, Bunky's, Ground Zero Coffee, MadCat Pet Supplies, Joseph Huber Brewing Co., and Pepsi Cola.

Yahara Place Park is breathtakingly situated on the northern shore of Lake Monona where it meets the Yahara River just a couple of blocks from Williamson St., Schenk's Corner, and the O'Keeffe/Marquette school complex. This is a very residential area so bus, walk or bike (bike racks available) to the event if possible. The event is handicapped accessible and free to the general public.
