If you wanted to be square and compartmentalizing, you could call Earthless "stoner rock." But that's not very telling, or fair, or even fun. The latest Mario Rubacalba band (Rocket from the Crypt, Clikatat Ikatowi), Earthless plays mammoth 30-minute shows made up of just one solid, stunning song of Black Sabbath-y jamming, huge guitar muscling, Mario's mad-man drumming and funked-out druggy bass runs.
| With most bands, a one-song, half-hour set would be exhausting and lame, but for Earthless it seems a natural, organic extension of its ancestor bands. A five-minute guitar solo? Sure, if it keeps its heat. Wandering jam-outs that come back to the same riff 15 minutes later? Why not? |
|
Occasionally the band will end its set with a cover or a shorter song, but the juice lies in the jam: the heaviness, the rhythmic sexiness and the occasional moment of brilliance. And it's all instrumental, except for an occasional lark. Earthless' music is too pure for vocals, too much of a one-mood marathon. Add a vocalist into the mix — a San Diegan Robert Plant or Ronnie Van Zant — and the whole thing would go to pot (no pun intended).
