Liquorice Quartet has one of those beautifully double-edged band names that actually manages to sum it up perfectly. The music it produces is candy, yet something far more sinister has seeped into the vat. The result is sweet but thought provoking like a goth who's gone to pink and plastic. The band is Kelley Mitchell on organ, Lauren Spears on bass, Chris Fields on guitar and Walter Bitts on drums. Fields' bright riffs jangle along to Bitts' snappy, '60s-inspired drum beats while frontwomen Mitchell and Spears, both formerly of the Lories, have voices that lilt across the tracks like an afternoon in a poppy field. If the quartet's catchy brand of retro rock doesn't get your head bobbing, you just might be deaf. Or dead.
