The Karl Strauss Story

As two recent college grads, co-founders Chris Cramer and Matt Rattner had sampled enough beer to know a good beer when they tasted one.  On a post-grad around-the-world trip in the summer of 1988, Chris discovered microbrew beer at a pub in Fremantle, Australia – a cool port city much like San Diego. Chris came home and couldn’t get that beer out of his head so he talked his buddy Matt into opening a similar kind of brewpub in San Diego.

But Chris and Matt didn’t know much about brewing beer.  Lucky for them, Chris’s Uncle just happened to be Master Brewer Karl Strauss, a renowned German brewmaster who had been in the beer business his whole life. Karl believed handcrafted microbrew beer would be “the beer of the future” – so they got to work.  Chris and Matt would mention a favorite beer flavor and Karl would work up a recipe for a microbrew version.  Working out of Chris’ apartment at 2810 Mission Blvd (the one with the blue pipes), two college kids in their mid-twenties and one 70 year old Master Brewer put together a plan to make the best tasting beer that had ever been brewed in San Diego.

Not sure what is going through my head in this freaky photo. I was clearly enjoying my Gas Lamp Golden something or other at Karl Strauss.

Thinking we would be at Howl at the Moon, Marshall had brought along some Tony Roma's to eat. So then we had to sneak it into Karl Strauss.
