For its 1929 opening as the Fox Theater, then California's third largest performance hall -- more than 100,000 people turned out, which means exactly two of every three San Diegans showed up. One of the grandest spectacles of opening night was the lowering of the hall's immense chandelier, from which "eight beauties" emerged, like angels stepping from the firmament. That chandelier is still there, shimmeringly awaiting its next assignment as the Elevator of Love.

The San Diego Symphony purchased the hall in 1984, and spent $5 million on its renovation. The result: a state-of-the-art performance venue whose spectacular heritage was, if anything, embellished. A few years back the symphony struck what for all intents and purposes was its last note, and this grande dame fell into a deep and woeful sleep. But now the symphony is back, the doors are open wide, and once again the great hall is playing host to everything from the symphony, to rock 'n' roll extravaganzas, to female body-building competitions. You can almost hear the chandelier angels cheering.

Tickets: Symphony tickets available from the box office, (619) 235-0804, in advance or day of event. Student rush tickets ($10) are available for the San Diego Symphony's Masterworks concerts half an hour before performances during winter season, depending on availablility and with proof of enrollment. $10 lawn tickets are available for everyone during the summer. Group rates available.

Parking: The venue is downtown, and you're on your own. Look for metered parking on the street, or use one of the pay lots along A and B Streets. Parking is $10.
